Photodiode is a semiconductor device that changes light signal into electrical signal. Its core part is also a PN junction. Compared with ordinary diodes, the difference in structure is that in order to accept the incident light, the area of PN junction should be larger and the electrode area should be smaller. Moreover, the junction depth of PN junction is very shallow, generally less than 1 μ M. Photodiodes work under reverse voltage. When there is no light, the reverse current is very small (generally less than 0.1 μ a), which is called dark current. When there is light, the energy carrying photons enter the PN junction and transfer the energy to the bound electrons on the covalent bond, which makes some electrons break away from the covalent bond, thus producing electron hole pairs, which are called photo generated carriers.
